Walking is one of the most easiest ways of staying healthy. Among the many benefits of walking is a reduction in blood pressure, total cholesterol, body fat and glucose levels.
For people with flat feet, walking can increase stress on the feet because of the lack of a well-formed arch to absorb the impact of ground forces acting on the feet while walking.
As a result, there is a higher possibility of developing common foot conditions such as plantar fasciitis, bunions, metatarsalgia, etc.
The authors of this study aimed to find out the benefit of wearing arch support insoles during uphill and downhill walking.

For this purpose, 16 healthy college students with flat feet were recruited for the study. A footprint device was used for recording each student’s footprint.
The participants were instructed to walk uphill and downhill on an inclined treadmill for 15 minutes each in standardised footwear with either a pair of arch support foot insoles, or a pair of flat insoles.
One of the main findings of the study was a decrease in the VO2 Max, or the maximum amount of oxygen consumed by the body, during both uphill and downhill walking with arch support insoles.
This means that wearing arch support insoles can make it easier for people with flat feet to take part in uphill and downhill walking.
Moreover, there was also less muscle fatigue recorded in students wearing arch support insole as compared to flat insoles wearers.
