Effect of Foot Orthoses Contour on Pain Perception in Individuals with Patellofemoral Pain

Abstracts

Ten individuals with unilateral patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) were recruited for the study.

The control group was made up of ten healthy individuals.

A Comfort-Support Assessment Tool was used to specify overall orthotic comfort and cushioning (forefoot, arch and heel) along with support (arch and heel).

Two kinds of orthoses were provided to the participants: contoured and flat inserts.

Each participant was asked to walk 100m to break in the foot orthoses before testing.

The PEDAR pressure insole was then placed, in the participant’s shoe on top of the orthoses.

Each participant was asked to walk 15m across the walkway thrice.

After data collection, participants wore the same orthoses every day for the next three weeks.

The PEDAR pressure insole was again placed in the shoes worn, on top of the orthoses.

The same three trials were conducted for a second time, on the same pair of foot orthoses after three weeks.

Each participant was then asked to complete the Comfort-Support Assessment Tool.

Participants with PFPS were also asked to rate their level of knee pain after wearing the orthotics for three weeks.

The group returned after a week to undergo the same tests for the second pair of foot orthoses.

Since only 60% of the PFPS participants had a reduction in knee pain, contoured orthoses cannot be expected to provide pain relief for all individuals with PFPS and an individualistic approach is necessary while recommending foot orthoses.
